pi-console: A Neovim frontend for Pi

2026-10-13
neovim (3) tmux (2) ai-tools (2) pi (2)

As discussed in this post, I've been using pi as my daily coding agent interface. What started as pi-nvim has now been separated into a standalone project I'm calling pi-console. The main reason is so that I can have a more clean separation between my actual dotfiles (which are mostly configs), and this pi-console setup, which is becoming a software-ish thing of its own. And in case others want to use/examine it, it's easier to share a separate project than to have it buried in my dotfiles. Below are some capabilities it includes:

Screenshots

Conversation view

pi-console conversation in a tmux popup, with a rendered transcript, editable prompt, and session statusline

The conversation view combines a rendered Markdown transcript with an editable prompt buffer. The statusline shows the model, thinking level, token and context usage, and cost. You can see that there are two main buffers -- the input and the transcript. The transcript is using the render-markdown.nvim as the backbone with some special highlighting that I injected. The input buffer is just a regular buffer. The nice part about having these as buffers is that you can resize the pane, "zoom in" (by opening the buffer in a new tab), and can use all of nvim's features (e.g. search, visual selection, etc) on both buffers.

Session overview

Session overview listing idle, waiting, and working conversations, with directory, workspace, and title columns

The overview lists open conversations and their status, working directory, workspace, and title. Details for the selected session appear below the list. This is the place where you can see all open conversations and their status, and can select one to resume or close it. I have it bound to prefix + o in my config so that I can always bring this up instead of trying to remember where things are.

Session picker

Session history picker with saved conversation titles, directories, timestamps, and a transcript preview above the list

The session picker searches saved conversations and previews the selected transcript before resuming it. It also provides archive and trash actions. This and any other picker mechanism in the project are implemented using fzf-lua project. You can select a session to resume/open it, or mass select sessions to archive or delete them permanently.

Conversation tree

Conversation tree showing message branches and a preview of the selected user message

The tree view shows conversation branches and a preview of the selected message, letting you revisit earlier messages or take a different branch. You can also remove branches or messages using this view. This allows us to use context very efficiently -- for example, you can ask some clarifying question to understand what the agent is talking about. Once you understand, you can go back to the previous agent message, pretend you understood it already, and then tell it to start working on the task.

Tool output/reasoning trace

Reasoning trace of the agent in a floating buffer

The tool outputs, reasoning traces, skill invocations etc are all visible in a floating buffer that can be exited using q or using C-{hjkl}.

Subagent transcript

A delegated reviewer's transcript in a floating window over the parent conversation

You can view the transcript of a subagent or send actions to it through the subagent menu in the parent session. This screenshot is showing the transcript view.

Question picker

Question picker asking for a color preference, with Green, Red, Orange, and a custom response option

When the agent asks a multiple-choice question, the picker lets you select an answer or type your own response. Pickers like these that are blocking the conversation -- i.e. a response must be given before the agent can continue -- can also be "hidden" and be accessed again later, for example to view the transcript again. but no other pickers may be spawned until the blocking one is resolved.

OpenAI Codex usage

OpenAI Codex usage popup showing remaining five-hour and weekly quotas, reset timestamps, and time remaining

The usage view displays the remaining five-hour and weekly Codex quotas, along with reset times and countdowns.
